Veteran Federation of Rural Workers/SIPTU activist and former Coillte employee Paddy Murphy has been the driving force as Chairperson of the George Brown Memorial Committee in his native Inistioge, Co. Kilkenny. His fifty years of activity in commemorating that heroic son of Inistioge, George Brown, who gave his life in defence the Spanish Republic against the combined forces of European Fascism at the 1937 Battle of Brunete, came to fruition with the George Brown commemorative weekend held in Inistioge on June 26 and 27, 2008. The first George Brown Memorial Lecture was delivered by SIPTU Head of Research Manus O'Riordan, while SIPTU General President Jack O'Connor presided over the following morning's events. For the full text of that lecture and an account of the weekend's events, see the attached pdf.
