Agreed new labour standards must be seen to work before open border status granted to Romania and Bulgaria

Speaking at the Union's Regional Conferences, SIPTU General President, Jack O'Connor told delegates that agreed new labour standards must be implemented and enforcement in place before open border status is extended to Romania or Bulgaria. Otherwise he said Ireland will continue to witness the exploitation of vulnerable migrant labour to drive down pay levels and dismantle pensions.

SIPTU and Solidarność co-operation agreement

Mr Janusz Sniadek, President of the Polish trade union ‘Solidarnosc’,- the largest trade union in Poland - met the officers of SIPTU to sign a co-operation agreement between the two unions. Mr Sniadek was accompanied by his Union's International Secretary, Mr Andrzej Adamczyk .

Since May 2004, Polish workers have had the same right to work in Ireland as Irish workers.  Polish workers, by law, are also entitled to the same legal protection and benefits as Irish workers.  However, in reality, many Polish workers have been subjected to exploitation and discrimination. 

SIPTU and Solidarnosc have been co-operating for some years to encourage Polish workers in Ireland to join SIPTU and therefore secure protection against such exploitation.

Under-payment of migrant workers promotes inequality and racism.

Ireland today is at a cross roads between racism and harmony, SIPTU Regional Secretary Mike Jennings told a meeting of non-Irish SIPTUshop stewards in Liberty Hall, Dublin, today. “Sadly our Government is allowing bad employers to dictate our direction and systematically build an unfair society steeped in the nightmare of racism," he said.

2006 International Anti-Racism Day marked with new publication

Speaking today at the launch of a new publication, “Diversity in the Workplace – a Guide for Shop Stewards”, SIPTU General President, Jack O’Connor declared that strengthened employment regulation and proper enforcement of it will optimise the potential of the multicultural workplace. “Failure to do this will result in devastating consequences immediately and in the longer term,” he said.
