Union calls time on Irish Hotels Federation celebration of high profits based on low pay
“The hotels and restaurants industry employs 130,000 people and rakes in most of the €6.5 billion in tourism revenue each year, yet it pays some of the lowest wages”, SIPTU Regional Secretary, Christy McQuillan said this evening at a protest meeting in Kilkenny to highlight abuses in the sector. It is being held to coincide with the annual conference of the Irish Hotels Federation in the city.
Legal challenge to Hotels JLC withdrawn
The decision by the Irish Hotels Federation to withdraw its challenge to the legal mechanisms under which the Hotels Joint Labour Committee (JLC) operates has been welcomed by the Union’s National Industrial Secretary, Gerry McCormack.
Burlington closure a major setback
The closure of one of Dublin’s best known hotels, the Burlington, represents a major setback for over 400 employees and for the tourism industry, according to SIPTU General President, Jack O’Connor.
SIPTU represents a wide variety of workers in the tourism and hospitality sector - including all grades of hotel and restaurant staff such as porters, receptionists, bar and food preparation personnel, waiting staff, household and cleaning workers, as well as employees in the leisure industry - such as golf and other sports clubs - and other tourist-related employments such as heritage centres and places of historical or cultural interest.
In addition the Union also represents many workers involved in providing access for tourists and other visitors via the public transport sector.
