Guaranteed future terms of employment key to finalising deal on sale of Great Southern Hotels
Date Released: 14 Jun 2006“The key to finalising a deal on the sale of the Great Southern Hotels is the guarantee of future employment standards - including pensions and outstanding monies due under Sustaining Progress,” said SIPTU’s National Industrial Secretary, Gerry McCormack.
"The Board of the Great Southern Hotels has refused to give a guarantee that the new workers’ pay and conditions of employment will be maintained in line with existing agreements, when the hotels are transferred to their new owners,” he said.
“This may also mean that future employees will be denied the right to trade union representation.
“We want the new owners to continue the same pension arrangements for current and future staff as apply at present.
“Management previously gave a commitment that the outstanding increases due under Sustaining Progress would be paid in full to our members. It now appears they are reneging on this commitment and are making the payment conditional on the completion of an agreement by June 14 – which of course is impossible.
“SIPTU has made it absolutely clear that we will not continue with our negotiations until all outstanding monies due under Sustaining Progress have been paid in full.
“If the Board cannot agree to our terms, then the matter must be referred to the Labour Relations Commission,” he concluded.
