Oration at James Connolly Commemoration
17.05.2009We are assembled here to honour the memory of James Connolly, one of the leading founders of our trade union who went on, along with Jim Larkin, to found the Labour Party as well. Connolly dedicated his life to organising workers to stand solidly together against the brutality of a system that prioritises the relentless pursuit of profit over every human and social consideration. Having selflessly spent his life in the service of working people, enduring the most extreme deprivation throughout, he went on to surrender it in pursuit of our national interest. He clearly understood that liberation from the tyranny of colonial occupation and winning the independence of Ireland were central to the emancipation of working people as well.

SIPTU General Secretary says Larkin’s message of social solidarity more important now than ever at launch of Commemorative Stamp
29.04.2009SIPTU General Secretary Joe O’Flynn says values of social solidarity espoused by Big Jim Larkin more important now than ever. He was speaking at the launch of the An Post stamp issued today to commemorate the centenary of the founding of SIPTU’s forerunner, the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union, in 1909.

Fight for union recognition an unfinished part of Larkin legacy
30.01.2009Trade union leaders “are engaged in very tough negotiations to ensure the gains made in recent agreements on workplace rights are not eroded by the current employers’ offensive”, SIPTU General Secretary Joe O’Flynn said today. “The most crucial of these gains is a commitment from the Government to outlaw discrimination against trade union activists in the workplace.”
