SIPTU will not support what it terms “a watered down” version of the Lisbon Treaty that exposes workers to its “Free Market” aspects, while denying them the benefit of “balancing measures” which are integral to it. The Union’s National Executive Council decided today to insist on a Government commitment to legislate for a right to the benefits of “proper collective bargaining” (including prohibition of discrimination against workers seeking to exercise it), before lending its support to the Treaty. The Union’s General President, Jack O’Connor, said “that entitlement to the benefits of collective bargaining and all that went with it was enshrined as a Fundamental Right in the ‘Charter of Fundamental Rights’ which are now an integral part of the Treaty. It constitutes one of the key ‘balancing elements’ to a Free Market proposition and it will apply to workers in virtually every other country in Europe – but the Irish Government have not made any commitment to legislate for it.” See attached booklet for more information.
