Industrial action at Charleville & District Association for the Handicapped

Date Released: 18 Nov 2003

Seven SIPTU members employed at the Charleville & District Association for the Handicapped, Charleville, Co. Cork will begin industrial action on Monday, November 24, 2003, in pursuit of improved pay and conditions, according to SIPTU's Mallow Branch Official, Liam Allen.

"Our members have no sick pay scheme, no pension entitlements, no incremental pay scale and are earn just over €7 an hour, compared with Care Assistants who are earning €12 to €13 an hour," said Mr. Allen.

"For almost three years now, we have been trying to improve the pay and conditions of our members and they are now at end of their tether.

"We referred this matter to the Labour Relations Commission only to be advised to go back to talks at a national level. When we sought a Labour Court hearing with the Department of Education, the Department could not give us a data for a hearing.

"The management of the Association say they cannot negotiate improvements in pay and conditions unless they get increased funding from the Department of Education.

"We are very conscious of the valuable and caring work which the Association does on behalf its clients, but we have no alternative but to take this action on behalf of our members.

"We remain available for discussions at all times in an effort to prevent this dispute going ahead on Monday next," concluded Mr. Allen.
