Joint Statement on Immigrant Workers
Date Released: 17 Nov 2003¨ SIPTU and the NUJ are both committed to the development of a harmonious, tolerant, multi-cultural and multi-racial society. ¨ SIPTU and the NUJ support the rights of immigrant workers to fair and equal treatment in employment. ¨ SIPTU and the NUJ support the right of all workers - regardless of nationality or origin - to join and be represented by a trade union. ¨ SIPTU and the NUJ demand that the State dedicate more resources to the protection of immigrant workers from exploitation. ¨ SIPTU and the NUJ will continue to campaign for the elimination of all forms of racism and xenophobia from the workplace and society. ¨ SIPTU and the NUJ, while fully supporting the right of free speech in society and in the print and broadcast media, will co-operate to expose individuals and media organisations which are guilty of incitement to hatred. ¨ SIPTU and the NUJ recognise that incitement to hatred should be and is a criminal offence. Therefore both Unions commit themselves to supporting appropriate and effective means, including legal and educational measures and political activities, designed to eliminate such incitement from Irish society - including all sections of the Irish media. ¨ SIPTU and the NUJ will co-operate to ensure that immigrant workers and their concerns are represented and reported in a fair and balanced manner. ¨ SIPTU and the NUJ will support initiatives designed to assist the integration of immigrant workers into the workforce and Irish society generally. ¨ SIPTU and the NUJ will circulate this joint statement widely within their respective organisations to encourage trade union members to realise and appreciate the positive, valuable contribution which immigrant workers can and do make to the Irish economy and to the community in general. ¨ SIPTU and the NUJ resolve to work together - and in co-operation with the Irish Congress of Trade Unions - to eliminate all forms of racism in the workplace through jointly organised educational and awareness programmes including workplace training.
