Aer Rianta unions defer strike action as Minister agrees to 'meaningful' talks on company's future

Date Released: 04 Nov 2003

Aer Rianta unions have agreed to defer tomorrow's two hour strike after intensive discussions with senior officials at the Department of Transport. The decision was made on the basis that commitments had been given by the Minister for Transport, Mr Seamus Brennan, to meaningful talks on the future of the company.

He accepted that there were differences of opinion about the implications of breaking up Aer Rianta and he respected those differences. Talks will commence on Friday.

Priority will be given to the issues of the Shannon stopover and the second terminal at Dublin airport. Talks on these issues will conclude by December 5th, 2003, and Mr Brennan has given a commitment that he will not bring proposals to Cabinet on these matters before the talks conclude.

There will also be bilateral talks on the implications of the proposal to break up Aer Rianta and an independent chairperson will be appointed to facilitate discussions on the implications of any proposed break up for pay, conditions of employment, pensions and job security of Aer Rianta employees.

SIPTU regional secretary Mr Mick Halpenny said the talks today had represented significant progress in ensuring that the concerns of Aer Rianta workers would be addressed. On this basis the unions had agreed to a deferral of tomorrow's strike action.
