Dublin City Council workers vote for industrial action on November 6

Date Released: 30 Oct 2003

Workers in the cleansing section of Dublin City Council have voted overwhelmingly to take industrial action in support of their colleagues in Oxigen Environmental who are in dispute over basic employment rights, declared SIPTU's Local Authority Branch Secretary, Paul Smyth.

"SIPTU has served a weeks' notice of industrial action on Dublin City Council today," said Mr. Smyth. "The initial action will be take the form of a half days' work stoppage on the morning of Thursday November 6, during which time, there will be no bin collection," he said.

"Workers employed in Oxigen Environmental have been in dispute with management since October 14, over their right to be represented by a trade union and their terms and conditions of employment. Many of them have been harassed by management once it was known they had joined SIPTU.

"We requested meetings with management to discuss a variety of issues over the past three years, but they continually refused to respond to our request.

"The workers want professional trade union representation, an end to bullying and harassment, the implementation of the EU Working Time Directive and proper sick pay and pension schemes.

"The management has refused to allow the matter to go before the Labour Relations Commission and instead offered a thousand euro to each employee in back money and talked of bonuses and wage increases as soon as the union served strike notice.

"We will also be gathering outside the Civic Offices on Wood Quay at 10am on November 6, to demonstrate our grievances," concluded Mr. Smyth.
