Threat of industrial action at Greencore still on the agenda

Date Released: 20 Oct 2006

“The threat of industrial action over severance terms for former Greencore employees is still very much on the agenda,” warned SIPTU General Secretary, Joe O’Flynn.

“In the last few days, the Labour Court has written to Greencore once again clarifying the Court’s position.  That definitive clarification fully supports SIPTU’s interpretation.  Management should now accept the recommendation and look after the workers who helped to make Greencore the successful company that it is today,” said Mr. O’Flynn.

“I don’t think the additional cost will dent the almost €100 million compensation packaged offered by Government too much, or effect Greencore chief executive David Dilger’s annual package of over €1million!

“The method of calculation which management is using to determine the severance package means a potential loss of up to €60,000 for some 80 of our longer serving members.

“The Labour Court said that ‘actual finishing salary, excluding overtime’ should be used.  SIPTU got clarification from the Court on what exactly they meant and we were assured that our interpretation was the correct one – that it should include full annualised hours.

“We accepted an invitation to return to the Labour Court for a final clarification on their recommendation but management declined the invitation to attend.

“Last month a protest rally was held in Mallow as a show of solidarity with the Greencore workers.  I was delighted to see so many there – over 1,000 people turned out. On that occasion I said I was confident that workers would get their entitlement and I still believe that,” he concluded.

Joe O’Flynn was speaking at the opening session of the Union’s Western Region Conference in the Great Southern Hotel in Killarney today.
