"It should never have come to this!" - response to ruling on Ryanair's bid to take over Aer Lingus
Date Released: 21 Dec 2006Responding to the European Commission's ruling that Ryanair's proposed €1.4bn takeover of Aer lingus would raise serious competition concerns, SIPTU's National Industrial Secretary, Michael Halpenny, said "it should never have come to this."
"If the Government had not made the disasterous decision to privatise Aer Lingus then the airline and the workforce would not have been put in jeopardy, following a hostile take-over bid by a predadtor such as Ryanair.
"However, it seems that in ordering a second phase indepth probe, the European Commission is reflecting the serious competition concerns already identified by the Unions and the workforce. "The employees - through the ESOT vote - have already resoundly rejected the Ryanair bid as holding nothing for the airline, the consumer or the employees and we believe that in its investigation the European Commission should find likewise," he concluded..
