Workers shocked at extent of job losses in Clonmel
Date Released: 16 Nov 2007Around 150 jobs at their Bulmers plant in Clonmel, Co Tipperary and Dublin, are to be axed as part of a cost-cutting plan.
According to SIPTU Branch Organiser, Nicholas Parker, the Union will be seeking an early meeting with management to begin negotiations on the best possible severance package for the members.
“But before we begin that process,” said Mr. Parker, “we need to reach agreement that all redundancies will be on a voluntary basis and we need to reach agreement on how theses job losses will impact on the remaining workers.
“In other words, nothing is agreed, until everything is agreed.
“The redundancies at Bulmers will be a huge blow to Clonmel and the surrounding environs. Bulmers was the 'flagship' company in the area and employed over 600 people. Just twelve months ago they couldn’t keep up with recruitment at the plant.
“With Christmas just around the corner, this is particularly hard news to take for the workers, their families and the community,” he said.
