SIPTU leaders pay tribute to members who lost their lives in Bray fire today
Date Released: 26 Sep 2007SIPTU General President Jack O’Connor, the General Secretary Joe O’Flynn and Vice President Brendan Hayes paid tribute today to Brian Murray and Mark O’Shaughnessy, the two retained fire fighters who lost their lives in Bray this morning. In a joint statement they said:
“SIPTU members across the country wish to pay tribute to the work of their colleagues in the retained fire fighting services and extend their sympathy to the families of Brian Murray and Mark O’Shaughnessy. The role of part-time fire fighters rarely receives the acknowledgement it deserves and it is unfortunate that it is only at times like this that the community realises the debt we owe them for their selfless and often dangerous work.
“Brian Murray will be well known to many SIPTU members. He was a leading workplace representative in Bray and was a delegate to the National Retained Fire Fighters Conference. Over many years he made a very important contribution to improving the working conditions of his colleagues and in securing more resources for the service.
"Mark O’Shaughnessy was a younger man, with a great commitment to the service who wanted to make a difference for the better in the lives of others and the community in which he lived.
“Both men demonstrated the courage and total dedication to duty that is in the best tradition of the fire service and will be sorely missed by their families, comrades and friends.”
