APW Galway closes with loss of 138 jobs

Date Released: 07 Nov 2008

The metal fabrication firm APW Galway Limited is closing with the loss of 138 jobs. The company met with SIPTU Branch Organiser Brendan Cunningham this morning.

The company has gone into liquidation and only statutory redundancy will be available to the workers. Mr. Cunningham said afterwards that there was no prospect for additional payments and members may have to wait up to twelve weeks for payment of their entitlements as the money will have to come from the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment fund.

“The company has agreed to expedite P45s and we will be in touch with the Department of Social and Family Affairs to see how they can assist members during the interim. The only consolation we have is that thanks to our campaign in 2004 the statutory redundancy payments have been raised from half-a-week’s pay per year of service to two weeks' pay per year of service.

“However, this is a devastating blow for Oranmore.”
