Responding to the Economic and Social Crisis
09.07.2009Clearly the Government and employers have concluded that there is only one response to the economic crisis. This involves ‘restoring competitiveness’. This in turn means correcting the imbalance in the public finances, saving the banking system (but avoiding nationalisation at all costs) and reducing costs in the economy so that goods and services can compete more effectively on the world market. Normally countries would do this by devaluing their currency but since we are in the Euro (thankfully) that option is not open so they are trying to do it by driving down wages and conditions of employment. Historically the slashing of labour costs and mass unemployment are the preferred solution of the political right in a severe economic crisis. The result, as we are witnessing today, is a determined and sustained campaign to roll back decades of gains achieved by workers acting through their unions.

SIPTU General Officers and the SIPTU Solidarity with Cuba Forum have joined with Cuba's ambassador to Ireland in a wreathlaying ceremony at the grave of James J. O'Kelly [1843-1916], Fenian leader and Home Rule MP, who brought the story of Cuba's first War of Independence to the attention of the Englsh-speaking world.
12.06.2009It was William O'Brien, following his retirement as ITGWU General Secretary in 1946, who commenced the work of preparing for publication half a million words of the correspondence of the Fenian leader of Irish America, John Devoy. The resulting two volumes included letters of immense historical importance from the latter’s friend and fellow Fenian leader, James J. O’Kelly, ranging over such issues as O’Kelly’s initiative in forging the “New Departure” alliance with Parnell and his further call for solidarity with the South African Zulus in their war against British occupation. But if the name of James J. O’Kelly nonetheless continues to remain virtually unknown in his native Ireland, it is otherwise in Cuba. In that other island nation at the far side of the Atlantic O'Kelly is acclaimed as a national hero, and the Spanish translation of his 1874 book on that country’s first War of Independence against Spanish occupation, the Ten Years War of 1868-78, has been republished in several Cuban editions.

Having selflessly spent his life in the service of working people, enduring the most extreme deprivation throughout, he went on to surrender it in pursuit of our national interest. He clearly understood that liberation from the tyranny of colonial occupation and winning the independence of Ireland were central to the emancipation of working people as well.

THERE IS A BETTER, FAIRER WAY
18.02.2009Our society is experiencing what may well come to be regarded as its most serious challenge in the history of the State. The combination of the global crisis aggravated by our own domestic problems threatens the security and quality of the lives of virtually all our citizens in a most dramatic way. The situation calls for a unified national response which involves all sectors. Everyone must be prepared to play their part in accordance with their capacity to do so. It is critically important that the privileged and the wealthy, especially those who did best during the celtic tiger years make a significant contribution. Instead the Government is rescuing the financial elite while ordinary PAYE workers are being thrown to the wolves. Meanwhile the wealthy are required to contribute nothing new. This will not work. We need a plan that is fair to everyone.

Statement on the Economic Crisis
19.01.2009It is important that we analyse the economic crisis properly and respond to the challenge in a manner that best protects the jobs, pay and living standards of union members and workers generally. There is no point in under-estimating things. This is a global crisis on a scale that has not been seen since the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and its aftermath. It was correctly described in a recent editorial in the Irish Times as ‘… intrinsic to the very functioning of the capitalist system’. Tragically, the global problem has been compounded by the policies pursued here since 1997. These embraced the neo-liberal free-market model hook, line and sinker. The tax base was dismantled by cutting capital taxes and the higher rates of income tax dramatically in the interests of the well off. This was offset by shifting the emphasis from direct to indirect taxes such as VAT and stamp duty, thereby transferring the burden disproportionately onto the middle and lower income groups during the credit-led property boom which followed. When it evaporated, this left a gaping hole in the public finances.

SIPTU President says Government can only resolve economic crisis with all sectors of society contributing their fair share

They are a consequence of the reckless agenda pursued by the PDs and the right wing of Fianna Fail between 2002 and 2007, during which our tax base was dismantled in the interests of the well off, capital taxation was all but abolished and top tax rates were reduced to a degree unparalleled in any developed western European country. All of this was camouflaged by the credit led property bubble it generated, which has now exploded against a background of an international depression, to the detriment of everyone in Ireland. It will require an unprecedented national effort, to which all sectors of society must contribute, to stabilise the economy over the next five to seven years.
