Frontline Alliance members outside ICTU to monitor talks between the social partners closely

Date Released: 28 Oct 2009

The General Secretary of the Irish Nurses Organisation, Liam Doran, said tonight that the opening session of talks between unions and Government on how to achieve €1.3 billion in savings on the public services had been the difficult. While committed to achieving a satisfactory outcome if possible to the negotiations he made it clear that there could be no interference with frontline workers’ pay and allowances.

Mr. Doran, who is also secretary of the 24/7 Frontline Service Alliance, added that the Alliance would be holding meetings daily to monitor progress in the talks and to keep the three Frontline Alliance organisations not affiliated to the Irish Congress of Trade Unions fully appraised of developments.

The three Frontline organisations outside Congress are the Garda Representative Association, the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors and the Psychiatric Nurses Association. The other members of the Frontline Alliance, the INO, SIPTU and the Prison Officers Association are all affiliated to Congress.

The Frontline Alliance is supporting the ICTU day of action on November 6th and will be holding the first of its own protests on November 11, when 1,000 members will March to the Dail in uniform.
