Communities in South West Protest against cuts
Date Released: 02 Nov 2009Community organisations campaigning against cuts are calling on all sections of society in the South West to support them in their protest on Thursday November 5th at 12.30 p.m. starting at the Mechanics Institute on Pery’s Square in Limerick.
According to SIPTU organiser, Eddie Mullins, the demonstration is intended to show the government that communities in Limerick, and the south west generally, demand that their voices are heard.
“Community activists, workers and service users alike in the community sector are this week united in their battle against the proposed cuts contained in the McCarthy report. These cuts will rip the fabric of the community apart to the very core. The services and supports provided to the elderly, to childcare, to school-going children, to youth services and to families right throughout Limerick city and county will be in serious jeopardy if these cuts are implemented,” said SIPTU organiser, Eddie Mullins.
“Almost every support organisation you can name throughout Limerick is supported by the community development initiatives. All of the charities, respite agencies and care support agencies are linked through this community system. Teenagers, elderly citizens and families supported by these organisations are in the most vulnerable category and as such are seen by the Government as a soft target,” Eddie Mullins said.
“It is absolutely unacceptable that the people who are in no way responsible for the current economic crisis should be expected to carry the burden of repairing the economy in this way. If we are to survive this recession intact as a society then there has to be a basic standard of care and support below which we will not go as the long term consequences are too great.”
He called on all sectors to join the protest on Thursday 5th November in Limerick. Assembly at Mechanics Institute, Pery’s Square 12.30 p.m.
