Agreement ends strike at Longford Nursing Home

Date Released: 10 Nov 2009

Striking workers in our Lady’s Manor Nursing Home in Longford will return to work over the next number of weeks following settlement proposals agreed by all parties to the dispute with the Rights Commissioner on Friday last (November 6,  2009).

Over 40 members of SIPTU were on strike at the nursing home in Edgeworthstown since the end of May due to the employer’s unilateral imposition of wage reductions and changes in work practices.Under the terms of the agreement SIPTU members will return to work with their original hours intact and on the same hourly rates of pay. The agreement also allows for 23 voluntary redundancies of both union and non-union staff members within the company.

The sick pay scheme will also be reinstated and a PRSA pension will be optional for all workers.According to Branch organiser, Sean Nolan, the resolution of the lengthy dispute was a result of the courage and tenacity of SIPTU members and the assistance of the office of the Rights Commissioner.

“This agreement was accepted by the huge majority of SIPTU members and finally brings this difficult and protracted dispute to an end. The result is a credit to the courage and tenacity of the nursing home workers who spent months out on pickets in the wind and the rain. We would also like to thank the people of Edgeworthstown and of Longford for their huge support and the assistance of Rights Commissioner, John Walsh, in settling the outstanding issues,” said Sean Nolan.
