SIPTU local authority workers in County Cork and in two Cork hospitals join those exempted from industrial action on Tuesday
Date Released: 23 Nov 2009SIPTU outdoor staff members with County Cork are to join their colleagues in Cork City and counties Clare and Galway in continuing to work on Tuesday (November 24) to combat flood and storm damage. SIPTU hospital support services staff at the Mercy Hospital and St Finbarr’s in the city will also be working to help deal with the flood crisis.
“Over 90 per cent of SIPTU members voted to support the national strike on Tuesday but they recognise several areas face emergencies because of the extraordinary weather conditions”, Gene Mealy, SIPTU National Organiser for the local authority sector said today. “SIPTU outdoor staff members in Clare, Galway, Cork city and county have now agreed to work on Tuesday and we will continue assessing the situation between now and then on an area by area basis throughout the country.
“SIPTU staff involved in providing care for the elderly services at St Finbarr’s hospital and employed at the Mercy hospital in Cork will also be working on Tuesday. Again, we will be monitoring the situation and our members will always respond wherever there are lives at risk or urgent humanitarian issues to be addressed.”
Up 2,000 SIPTU outdoor staff will now be engaged in emergency work on Tuesday to repair storm damage. The strike action, which SIPTU fully supports, is against further unilateral cuts in pay, conditions and services threatened by the Government, and it is also in support of ICTU’s ‘Fairer, Better Way’ Campaign.
