Frontline Alliance welcomes resumption of talks between Government and Public Services Committee of ICTU

Date Released: 25 Nov 2009

The Chairman of the 24/7 Frontline Services Alliance Des Kavanagh has welcomed the resumption of talks between the Public Services Committee of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions and the Government today over how to address the current economic crisis in a fair and equitable way. “We hope that further industrial action can be avoided but we will be carefully monitoring the talks to ensure that any proposals emerging from them take into account the special conditions in which frontline emergency workers operate”, he said.

The Secretary of the Alliance, Liam Doran, said that, “Given the assurances to the Alliance by ICTU President Jack O’Connor and ICTU General Secretary David Begg on October 7th that the interests of frontline emergency personnel would be fully represented and protected in negotiations, we look forward to a settlement that respects those special interests. The Chairman of the Public Sector Committee, Peter McLoone, went on record on November 10th stating that Congress intended to protect all pay, which he defined as ‘everything they receive’, in the talks. This means that allowances, overtime and other premium payments will have to be taken into account when negotiating with the Government.

“Because three of the six organisations affiliated to the Alliance are not members of the ICTU we will resume our practice of meeting each evening to brief our colleagues on progress in the negotiations. These meetings will begin tomorrow (Tuesday) evening.”
