FAIR DEAL ALLIANCE FORMED IN SLIGO

Date Released: 18 Dec 2009

SIPTU and other unions on Sligo Trade’s Council have agreed with local traders on a discount scheme for union members to protect retail jobs in the town and area. Following a controversy ignited by recent remarks by SIPTU Branch official, John McCarrick, in relation to the numbers of people shopping across the border the unions and local business people have joined in the job protection initiative.

Up to 200 local traders have agreed to form a Fair Deal Alliance to give union members a discount in purchases at their stores in order to stem the flow of shoppers to the North enhance business in the town.

“I am delighted with the response from the Traders of Sligo town to this initiative. Finally, a group in the private sector has recognised that the answer to the current crises is not to be found in cutting wages in the public or private sector as this just leaves less for everyone,” John McCarrick told Liberty on Line.
