Tribute to Tomas MacGiolla by SIPTU President Jack O’Connor

Date Released: 04 Feb 2010

The General President of SIPTU, Jack O’Connor, said this evening that he was deeply saddened to hear of the death of the former Workers’ Party President Tomas Mac Giolla. “He was a fearless champion of the interests of working people and the oppressed everywhere”, Mr O’Connor said. “Tomas MacGiolla was a dedicated revolutionary socialist who pursued the objectives of social justice and equality regardless of the consequences for himself.“

He originated in the physical force tradition but came to the conclusion that sustainable change and social justice could only be achieved and maintained through democratic participation in the political process.

“He was a man of intense personal integrity and was entirely selfless in his commitment to others. He was a life long supporter of the trade union movement. I extend my sympathy on behalf of SIPTU to his wife Mae and to his family.”
