SIPTU serves Strike Notice on seven Dublin hospitals

Date Released: 09 Mar 2010

SIPTU has served strike notice on seven Dublin hospitals for 48 hours with effect from Wednesday 7th April. Some 4,500 low paid members of the Union will withdraw their labour from 1.00 a.m. on Wednesday 7th April until 1.00 a.m. on Friday, 9th April.

The public hospitals affected are St. James, St. Vincents, Connolly Memorial, Mater, Beaumont, Tallaght and St. Colmcille’s. The strike forms part of SIPTU’s engagement with the ongoing campaign of industrial action in the public service.

SIPTU Health Sector Organiser, Paul Bell, said the planned strike action is in response to the refusal of the hospital managements to honour the terms of the ‘Towards 2016 Transitional Agreement 2008’, or to agree an alternative agreement, and over their threat to outsource the jobs of Union members.

“Approximately 4,500 support staff including porters, catering personnel, security, health care assistants and supervisors, will participate in the 48 hour withdrawal of labour,” Paul Bell said.

“Low level action is also anticipated for ambulance services in Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow.”

“Other hospitals in Dublin will have disputes in the weeks to follow and action in acute hospitals will be rolled out in the regions. Hospitals not on strike in Dublin are organising a solidarity fund to support striking workers,” he said.

Paul Bell added that the notice period served on the hospitals allows the employers ample time to engage in meaningful dialogue with SIPTU on the issues in dispute.
