Centenary Year Greetings

Date Released: 01 Jan 2009

On behalf of the National Executive Council of the Union, we would like to extend to all SIPTU members and their families our very best wishes for 2009.

In this our centenary year, we salute the courage, personal sacrifice, commitment and solidarity of the women and men who founded, built and sustained this great trade union. We are proud of the organisation of tens of thousands of men and women, the improvement of pay and conditions of work and the contribution made to the economic, social and political life of the country.

Over the last one hundred years, our Union has been to the forefront in fighting for social justice and demanding that the economy serves all the people and not just the rich and powerful. In solidarity with each other, the members of our Union have confronted exploitation and injustice and have sought to transform society so that all our people enjoy dignity and respect at work and in the community.

As we implement the Special Conference decisions on restructuring our Union, we appeal to all Union activists to participate in strengthening trade union organisation so that we can continue to defend the interests of working women and men and secure fairness at work and justice in society.

In this special year for the Union, we salute and congratulate all our activists for their commitment and involvement in the work of the Union and for their achievements with their members.
