SIPTU seeks meeting with SR Technics to resolve outstanding issues

Date Released: 30 May 2008

SIPTU has offered to meet SR Technics to resolve the one outstanding issue over workplace change at the company involving 21 aircraft handlers. The handlers have rejected a productivity proposal to refuel aircraft that was introduced at a very late stage in the current restructuring programme.

SIPTU Branch Organiser Pat Ward said tonight, “We represent over 500 of the 1,200 strong work force at SR Technics and we have agreed major changes on behalf of all our other members. We would ask SR Technics to help us resolve this one remaining issue, either through the existing internal procedures at the company, or by referring it to a third party, such as the Labour Court, under Towards 2016.

“The proposed changes regarding aircraft handlers were only put to us on Wednesday evening at the Labour Relations Commission without any prior notice. The men involved had less than 48 hours to consider the proposals, as opposed to several weeks of intensive negotiations for every other group.

“It beggars belief that the company would make a major decision over the future of a ten year contract with a major client such as Aer Lingus on the basis of a last minute productivity proposal affecting just 21 people out of a workforce of 1,200. We would therefore ask them to seriously explore with us a speedy resolution to this problem.”
