SIPTU members at Aviance to ballot on rescue package for company

Date Released: 10 Dec 2008

SIPTU members at Aviance are to ballot on rescue proposals to save 150 jobs at the company’s Irish operation in Dublin airport. This follows a three hour meeting at the airport this evening where major cost cutting measures were presented to the workforce.

Afterwards Civil Aviation Sectoral Organiser Dermot O’Loughlin said, “I am hopeful that, given the difficult trading environment in the aviation industry, members will accept the changes. If they do it will allow us to protect good quality jobs at the airport and consolidate the position of the company going forward.

“Unfortunately we are competing with anti-union operators who constantly seek to drive down wages and employment standards. Hopefully workers in those companies will realise that the only way to improve their own pay and conditions is by joining a trade union.”

Asked about the likely outcome of the ballot, Mr O’Loughlin said it was “too close to call”. A result is expected shortly after 4.30pm tomorrow.
