SR Technics unions to meet Government and opposition parties over future of North Dublin plant
Date Released: 19 Feb 2009SR Technics unions are to meet the Tánaiste, Mary Coughlan, and opposition parties today ahead of their next meeting with management tomorrow. SIPTU Branch Organiser Pat Ward said today that, “We intend to impress on the Tánaiste and the opposition parties that Ireland is in danger of losing a unique skills set that has been developed over the past fifty years at Dublin airport and will be gone forever if we allow the SR Technics plant to close.
“We will be asking the Tánaiste to become directly involved and ensure that the various state agencies look hard at ways in which they can assist in keeping these jobs in the region, either with SR Technics or alternative business options. I believe the SR Technics management team in Dublin produced a plan that would have ensured the continued operation of the plant on a viable basis but that it wasn’t given the light of day by senior management in Switzerland.
“I understand the Tánaiste has a copy of that plan and we are hoping she will be able to say whether she believes it could form the basis for further negotiations with SR Technics or other interested parties. We will also continue to lobby for Aer Lingus to become involved in rescuing these jobs. SR Technics is as integral part of our aviation sector as the air line.
“Given the scale and quality of employment at risk here, along with its strategic importance to the Dublin region, and to the country as a whole, we hope that the Government and all of the political parties put their shoulders to the wheel in helping us find a solution.
“We are also giving comprehensive consideration to an alternative plan to save these jobs.”
