SIPTU urges IDA to support new bid to save 900 jobs at SR Technics

Date Released: 31 Mar 2009

SR Technics has received a serious expression of interest within the past 24 hours to acquire its facility at Dublin airport and save 900 jobs. The company made the admission during a Labour Court hearing today in response to questions from SIPTU Branch Organiser Pat Ward. He also called on the IDA to help fund the proposed Transfer of Undertakings proposal, which comes in the form of a new Management Buy Out bid.

“I understand the MBO would need about €25 million in IDA aid, which is half the expected cost to the Exchequer of letting the facility close”, he said. “That is not to mention the loss to the economy of the skills base to the workforce and potential income it could generate, as it has for the past half century.

“At today’s hearing SR Technics said it was unwilling to defer the 600 redundancies planned for next Friday, because of the expense. Whatever financial justification the company offers for its callous attitude, it is really indefensible that it has yet to notify the employees of who exactly is going to lose their job on Friday.” The Labour Court is expected to issue a recommendation before the end of the week.
