Labour Court recommends SR Technics meets short fall in pension scheme and doubles ex gratia redundancy payments for workers

Date Released: 31 Mar 2009

The Labour Court has recommended that SR Technics make good the shortfall in the company’s defined benefit scheme and also any shortfall in the Irish Airline Superannuation Scheme, to which some of the employees belong. It further recommends that the ex gratia payment of one week’s pay per year of service be effectively doubled to two weeks pay, on top of the statutory two weeks per year of service that each employee is entitled to.

In view of the imminence of lay-offs beginning at the end of this week the Court also recommends payments in lieu of notice, which will run from two to eight weeks pay, depending on length of service. At least 200 employees should be entitled to the maximum eight weeks payment.

SIPTU Branch Organiser Pat Ward has welcomed the recommendation. “It vindicates the case made by the unions that the company can afford to do a lot better than the bargain basement scheme they were offering”, he said.

The Labour Court has also urged both sides to enter discussions on the implementation of the recommendation.
