File icon  Addressing the Health Care Crisis (pdf, 301 kb)

This report was researched and written by Sara Burke and produced jointly by SIPTU and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions. It draws heavily on 'How Ireland Cares - the Case for Health Care Reform' by A. Dale Tussing and Maev-Ann Wren (New Island, 2006), which itself was the result of a study ICTU had commissioned the authors to carry out, in advance of the opening of talks on social partnership in 2006. Where possible, statistics have been updated since the publication of 'How Ireland Cares'.

Addressing the Health Care Crisis

A joing SIPTU/Congress paper on health care - Addressing the Health Care Crisis - demolishes several myths about the modern-day health service and shows how the current crisis has resulted from a political failure to deliver on repeated pledges and commitments, particularly in terms of investment and bed capacity.  The paper contains updated figures on spending and bed numbers and examines the dangerous moves towards privatisation, particulalary the 'co-location' proposal that will irrevocably undermine the public health system in Ireland.  The paper also contains key proposals on building a health care system that is based on need rather than ability to pay.
