SCHOOL CARETAKERS

School caretakers 2 For far too long caretakers, have been neglected by the Department of Education when it comes to their terms and conditions of employment. SIPTU is working towards addressing this wrong and fighting for a national, strong and united caretakers’ voice.  There are three main grievances we want addressed:

Respect:  for the importance of the position. Caretakers are given responsibility for the safety and welfare of school children.
Recognition: for the multi job descriptions caretakers fill - by way of financial and other benefits.
Representation: for caretakers at national talks with the Department of Education, through SIPTU.

What can SIPTU do?

SIPTU aims to protect the rights of caretakers on a national level through awareness of  legal entitlements in the work-place and through trade union membership.

SIPTU also aims to improve working conditions for caretakers through education and involvement in issues of concern within their working life.

Why join SIPTU?

In the area of education, the various grades are represented by the appropriate union -  all grades except the ancillary staff grades. Teachers and school principals are represented by their organisations as are the school Boards of Management through the Joint Management Board.

If caretakers are to improve their terms and conditions of employment they must get organised and that means joining SIPTU, the Caretakers’ Union!

SIPTU will work on your behalf to: Ensure your employment rights are up-held. Protect and improve your pay, terms and conditions. Influence your working environment to make it safety compliant

Your safety at work is of utmost importance to SIPTU. We are aware from a recent survey that many caretakers are not aware of the legal protection they are entitled to at work.

SIPTU offers expert legal advice in this area and we take cases for our members who have suffered an occupational injury.

SI 146  is the working name of a Code of Practice in employment matters which grants employees the right to union representation during the following procedures:

  • The grievance procedure - this is when the employee has an issue with the employer.
  • The disciplinary procedure - this is when the employer has an issue with the employee. SIPTU will represent you in both.

Remember - you have a constitutional right to trade union membership! Use it!
