SIPTU disappointed at latest round of redundancies at Brooks Hanley group
SIPTU National Industrial Secretary Gerry McCormack said today he was disappointed to hear that the Brooks Hanley Group was proposing to shed a large number of jobs. “It is only about six months since we negotiated significant redundancies with the company and we will be meeting with them shortly to discuss the new proposed lay-offs. However it undoubtedly reflects the continuing downturn in the construction sector.”

Legislation on Corporate Manslaughter Long Overdue
A new offence of corporate manslaughter should be introduced immediately said SIPTU’s Dublin Construction Branch Organiser, Eric Fleming. “This offence has already been recommended by the Law Reform Commission but their report is gathering dust on a shelf somewhere.
High levels of non-compliance with mandatory pension scheme.
An investigation into the country’s largest private pension scheme - the Construction Federation Operatives Pension Scheme (CFOPS) - found considerable levels of non-compliance – as high as 57% - leaving thousands of workers without a pension, death-in-service or sickness benefits to which they are legally entitled.
SIPTU represents a wide range of workers in the construction industry including banksmen, crane drivers, scaffolders, steel fixers, plant operatives, painters and others.
As a result of the Union's efforts in organising construction workers, minimum rates of pay, terms and conditions of employment, pension and sick pay schemes are legally binding in the industry for all workers - irrespective of their nationality. SIPTU is also widely acknowledged as the driving force behind the ongoing campaign to secure proper health and safety standards for building workers in Ireland.
Construction workers left over €48,000 short as contractor drags feet over wages and pension contributions
21.12.2009 - SIPTU members employed by Westmeath companies, Oliver Donlon Development Limited and Clare Hill Plant Ltd, have found they will not be paid outstanding wages in the run up to Christmas. The 25 members concerned are owed €48,375 in arrears. The amounts vary from €1,398 to €3,961 each, and range from between six weeks and two weeks wages for work carried out on multi-million euro state contracts.
