Public meeting on decentralisation - Dunlaoghaire - May 30 2006

Date Released: 09 May 2006

In October 2005, the SIPTU Biennial conference gave its full support for the removal of all non-commercial State Agencies from the Government's decentralisation plan.

The position of State Agency employees is clear: to forcibly campaign to remove the State Agencies from the decentralisation programme.   Despite less than 1% of employees in State Agencies  ‘volunteering’ to relocation under the decentralisation programme, the Government continues to put structures in place to compel members to move as highlighted by the current industrial action in FAS.

In other State Agencies, such as BIM, not a single worker has applied to relocate under the decentralisation programme.  In addition, Failte Ireland has had no applications from its 223 staff for its plan to relocate to Mallow.  This position is reflective of the State Agencies as a whole.

There is an urgent need for full public debate on this issue of vital importance, one which ultimately threatens jobs, families and communities.  SIPTU General President, Jack O’Connor, has called on public representatives and other interested parties to attend a public meeting in Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin, to debate this issue and hear members serious concerns regarding the implementation of this ill-conceived Government plan.

We would call on all SIPTU members to assist us with our campaign to remove the State Agencies from the threat of decentralisation.  With pressure mounting and many Agencies making moves to secure land and buildings in their nominated locations, there is an even greater urgency to our task.
