Latest Developments on Decentralisation

BIM workers going nowhere

Date Released: 07 Jul 2006

“Not one Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) employee has expressed an interest in decentralisation.  But today the Taoiseach will announce the preferred tender to build the premises for the proposed relocation for BIM in Clonakilty” said Owen Reidy of SIPTU's State and Related Agencies Branch.

“BIM is already highly decentralised with a presence in Donegal, Galway, Cork, Waterford and Wexford,” he said.

“Relocating its HQ to Clonakilty will do nothing for the industry or the organisation.  This is merely a political stroke for the benefit of Government TDs hoping to retain their seats at the next election.

“But our members will not be treated as political pawns in this debacle. The Government should target its resources on important infrastructural issues such as health and education instead of wasting tax payers money on building a white elephant which will remain uninhabited.

“We have been told all along that the process of decentralisation is a voluntary one.  But – unlike civil servants – our members in specialists semi-State agencies have been offered no viable alternatives in the Government’s flawed, illogical and unpopular plan,” he concluded.
