Shop Stewards, Section Committees and activists have the central role of organising and representing members in their employment and in the Union. The Rules of the Union set out the specific roles and responsibilities of Shop Stewards and Section Committees.

The Secretary (Shop Steward) and President of a Section Committee may be elected annually by the members of the Section at a Section meeting or may be appointed annually by the Section Committee, with the approval of the Sector Committee. The other members of a Section Committee shall be elected annually by the members of the Section at a Section meeting.

Activists are trade unionists who play an active role both in industrial issues related to their workplace and Union organisation. As the mainstay of Union activity and strength the Union provides opportunities for activist training in representation and communications skills.
