SIPTU says jobs moratorium will cripple radiology services in the public health system
“The recently enforced recruitment moratorium will cripple radiology services within the health service if not reversed”, Health Professional Branch Organiser Kevin Figgis has warned. “The moratorium has already erased many previously approved positions and, with recruitment at a stand still, many vital positions within the profession are not being filled.
SIPTU calls for publication of Commission on Nursing Report
The SIPTU Nursing Convention in Sligo has called for publication of the Commission on Nursing Hours Report which deals with the implementation of a shorter week for nurses. Addressing the Convention today, Professor Tom Collins, Chairperson of the Commission on Nursing Hours, said members of the profession that he and his colleagues had met while compiling the Report, met felt marginalised and frustrated.
SIPTU health sector leader criticises approach of HSE and Fine Gael to cutbacks in health services
The Health Service Executive approach to cuts is counter-productive and disappointing, SIPTU National Industrial Secretary Matt Merrigan told the SIPTU Nursing Conference in Sligo today. “Much of the rhetoric by right wing politicians such as Leo Varadkar of Fine Gael is simply aimed at making cheap points rather than addressing serious issues of reform”, Mr. Merrigan said.
SIPTU health workers in Dublin vote by 98 per cent in favour of industrial action to protect their jobs and conditions
SIPTU members in the Dublin Health Services Branch have voted by 98 per cent to take industrial action if necessary to protect their jobs and conditions of employment. The count was concluded in Liberty Hall, Dublin, this afternoon.
Threat to mental health services
Members of SIPTU and the PNA have rejected the compensation package on offer for nurses working in the mental health services who are injured as a result of an assault at work. Both unions have balloted their members and the vote in favour of taking action to secure improvements in the scheme were overwhelming.
Unions rally for a decent public health service
The Dublin Council of Trade Unions and the ICTU Congress Youth Committee are campaigning for a decent public health service now. According to Des Derwin, President of the DCTU, the decline in our health services can be directly attributed to the drive towards privatisation. "The only way we can safeguard the interests of patients and staff is by defending and improving the public health services," he said.
Ambulance crews to strike on April 7, 2008
1,200 ambulance personnel nationwide, have served notice of industrial action on the Health Service Executive (HSE) to expire at 8.00am on April 7, 2008. The dispute concerns the HSE’s unilateral decision to sign contracts with three private ambulance service providers in contravention of an existing agreement between the HSE and its ambulance personnel that no such action would be taken without their prior acceptance.
HSE breached terms of Towards 2016 - Labour Court
In a recommendation issued on February 24, the Labour Court said the way in which the Health Service Executive introduced its recruitment embargo was in breach of the terms of Towards 2016.

SIPTU says the new HSE circular seeks to meet cost saving targets at the expense of temporary front line staff and patients
22.04.2009 - SIPTU National Industrial Secretary Matt Merrigan has condemned the new staffing restrictions proposed by the HSE. “The HSE is planning to cut contract and locum staff as the easy administrative option. It may be an easy option but it will be impact hardest on front line staffing levels and patients”, he said.
Ambulance strike averted
28.03.2008 - The threat of industrial action by the country’s 1,200 paramedics has been averted, following intensive negotiations with the HSE Employers Agency and health service unions last night.
