SIPTU in Hotels
All across Ireland, hotel workers are working together to make sure their voice is heard. In doing so they are choosing to improve their working lives. SIPTU as the Union for hotel workers is at the forefront of this.
SIPTU represents a wide variety of workers in the tourism and hospitality sector - including all grades of hotel and restaurant staff such as porters, receptionists, bar and food preparation personnel, waiting staff, household and cleaning workers.
There are many hotel workers in Ireland who are not afforded the basic respect in their day to day working lives. Many work long hours, with no overtime and without legally entitled breaks. Furthermore, many are not paid the correct rates of pay particularly on Sundays. In the current economic climate many hotel workers are facing even more difficult challenges. When there are cutbacks or staff let go, the pressure on those that remain becomes greater and greater. Their workload increases and it becomes impossible for them to complete their assigned tasks in a normal working day. SIPTU understands that these workers are scared and feel like they are alone, however together with our support we can try and make some changes.
In SIPTU we believe that the standards and reputation of a hotel are built on the ground by the workers and the hard work they put in day after day. In SIPTU we value hotel workers and understand the challenges they face on a daily basis. In hotels, how customers are treated is of the utmost importance; however, how the workers are treated is often neglected. In SIPTU we care for workers and together with the support of SIPTU we can ensure that you the worker get treated with the respect that you deserve.
