SIPTU and BFWAU seek immediate meeting with Spicers Bakery to discuss job losses

SIPTU and the Bakery and Food Workers Amalgamated Union (BFWAU) have requested an immediate meeting with the management of Spicers Bakery, Navan, Co Meath, to discuss recent redundancies at the food manufacturer. BFWAU and SIPTU members at Spicers Bakery held a meeting with union organisers on Tuesday (24th January) to discuss a management announcement of 15 staff redundancies and the temporary layoff of a further 12 workers.

SIPTU Organiser, John Dunne, said; “The company has stated that it is in severe financial difficulties and is unable to pay the redundancy entitlements due to the workers who have lost their jobs. Some of these workers have over 30 years’ service with the Spicer Company and are extremely concerned about the manner in which they have been treated.”

He added; “SIPTU and BFWAU have been in contact with the Labour Relations Commission seeking their assistance should efforts with the company to achieve a just result for our members prove unsuccessful. As it stands currently the redundant workers will have to wait over six months for their statutory redundancy entitlements to be honoured by the State. This situation is intolerable and must be addressed as a matter of urgency as the redundant and laid off workers will also have a prolonged wait before social welfare entitlements are paid.”
