SIPTU has condemned an assault last night (Wednesday, 14th November) on firefighters who were dealing with a blaze in the Southill area of Limerick City.
The incident, where firefighters attending to a fire in two houses came under attack from youths throwing stones and bottles, resulted in two firemen being hospitalised.
SIPTU Organiser, Con Casey, said: “Four units of the Limerick City Fire and Rescue Service were responding to the blaze when they came under attack at approximately 8.00 p.m. The attack resulted in two firefighters being injured. They were released from hospital this morning after being treated, one for concussion and the other for a neck and shoulder injury.”|
He added: “Such attacks on frontline emergency workers are completely unacceptable. The attack resulted in the fire crews having to withdraw from the incident for a period until the situation had calmed and gardaí arrived.”
