SIPTU Nursing and Workplace Representation
SIPTU-Nursing is not only committed to workplace representation but also to the protection of the qualifications of nurses, career enhancement and the development of nursing as a profession. SIPTU-Nursing is recognised as a representative body for all disciplines of student nurses in their workplace. The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) is affiliated to SIPTU giving a joint membership of 500,000 approximately. SIPTU-Nursing has, and will, continue to campaign for students’ rights and entitlements. Past campaigns have resulted in many improvements to pay and conditions of employment.
SIPTU is the largest health care Union representing all grades of health care professionals including:
- general nurses (public and private)
- midwives
- children’s nurses
- public health nurses
- registered nurse in mental handicap
- psychiatric nurses
- state enrolled nurses
- nursery nurses
- dental nurses
- radiographers
- phlebotomists
- dental technicians
- social workers

- public analyst technicians
- care staff
- clerical staff.
As a Union member you will have access to the Union’s Equality Unit; Health and Safety Unit; Research Department; Education and Training Department; Publications and the Public Relations Department.
You will be entitled to legal aid should you have an accident at work or other work related matters.

SIPTU's National Nursing Council is made up of quaified nurses. The officers of the Council are: President Padraig Heverin; Vice President, Siobhán Quirke, and Secretary Mary Durkin.
The Council is supported by the following full time staff: National Nursing Organiser: Louise O’Reilly and Administrative Assistant, Geraldine Dempsey.
