SIPTU warns employers over SEO rates of pay and protections for construction workers

Date Released: 25 June 2020

SIPTU Construction Sector Organiser, John Regan, has called on the Construction Industry Federation (CIF) to confirm that the next pay increase of 2.7% due to construction workers on the 1st October will be paid and that all the terms of the Sectoral Employment Order (SEO) for the industry will be honoured in full. His call follows the decision of the High Court on Tuesday, 23rd June to strike down the SEO.

John Regan said: “We are calling on the Government to confirm it is preparing an appeal of the High Court decision to the Supreme Court. The decision, if un-appealed, could have a knock-on effect on all SEOs that cover the minimum pay for worker grades in the construction industry and also have implications for their sick pay and pension entitlements.

“Given that the COVID-19 crisis is ongoing with a real possibility of a second wave of the virus, construction workers must be assured that they have income protection if they have to go into self-isolation or attract the virus and, if they are unfortunate enough to lose their life, that their death in service benefit will be there for their loved ones.”

SIPTU Divisional Organiser, Karan O’Loughlin said: “If industrial action is required against any employer who fails to honour the current terms of the SEO this Union will take it on behalf of our members.”
