SIPTU seeks meeting with HSE and management of Camphill in Duffcarrig over threat to facility

Date Released: 18 June 2021

SIPTU representatives are seeking an urgent meeting with the HSE and management of the Camphill community at Duffcarrig, in Gorey, county Wexford following the decision by the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) to cancel the registration of the care facility.

SIPTU Organiser, Ger Malone said: “SIPTU members were devastated at the decision by HIQA to issue a notice of cancellation of registration for the Camphill facility in Duffcarrig, Gorey, Co. Wexford last week. Staff at Duffcarrig have at all times worked to ensure that the residents of the facility experience quality care in a professional manner despite the uncertainty that now surrounds the future of the site.

“SIPTU representatives have sought a tripartite meeting with Duffcarrig and the HSE to discuss and protect the future of the facility. We will also seek to ensure that the industrial relations process which was agreed with Duffcarrig management to address issues around terms and conditions of employment and staffing levels is completed. The rates of pay and terms and conditions are seriously out of line with sector norms.

“Separately, SIPTU and the ICTU have sought a meeting with the Minister of Health, Simon Donnelly, to address the funding of Section 39 employments. To date, regrettably, the minister has not acceded to this request. The inadequate funding of the sector is at the heart of the difficulties in Duffcarrig. Our members will work with any future service provider to ensure that residents continue to be well cared for.”
