Together, Stronger

Over the past few years the Community Sector has become a critical pillar in the provision of a range of vital services. From home care to homelessness and drug addiction, the Community Sector is leading the way. However, as the sector develops, so do its needs and the needs of its workers.

Within this changing environment, workers need an effective voice. It is only by standing with your colleagues and SIPTU that you will be able to promote your interests, the interests of your service and the sector as a whole.

That is why 'Equal At Work' has organised a conference on November 21 2006 in Liberty Hall, Dublin. The Community Sector recognises that by organising with SIPTU, they are stronger and better able to promote the interest of workers and service users.

What does organising with SIPTU mean?

SIPTU is an organising union, which means that you make the union decisions that affect your workplace. SIPTU is there to support, advise and provide training, so that you can make partnership with management a partnership of equals.

But within a wider context, SIPTU will be working with worker representatives to address issues that affect the sector as a whole. For example, the recent Social Partnership Talks (Towards 2016) saw a major breakthrough for the Community Sector, with the Department of Finance agreeing to discuss pay and pensions with SIPTU.

How do we organise?

Joining SIPTU is as easy as filling out a form, however for membership to be of real value, we need to organise a union structure. This will facilitate good communication with your colleagues, union, and employer to ensure that your concerns are addressed.

The first step to becoming organised is holding a meeting with a union organiser. If you would like to arrange a meeting to hear more about SIPTU and how we can benefit you and your colleagues, please use the details below.

Contact SIPTU

When contacting SIPTU, please include your name, employment and contact number. A union organiser will get back to you within two working days.

  • Call SIPTU now to arrange meetings etc.  This means you decide as a group what you want to change - and the only way you can bring about change is if you are united with your colleagues and SIPTU. That way workers will have an effective voice.
  • By developing a union structure throughout the community sector, we will be able to promote the interests of not only the workers, but of the sector of a whole.
