SIPTU representatives have written to the management of the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) seeking an urgent meeting following troubling speculation about potential job losses and organisational cutbacks.
The Union has also formally contacted the Oireachtas Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport and Media to highlight the issue and protect the workers who form the backbone of football development in Ireland.
“Our members are deeply concerned by ongoing rumours about restructuring and job losses in the FAI,” said SIPTU Organiser Hugh Kennedy.
“This speculation, and the absence of clear communication from management, is creating significant anxiety. These are the workers who help drive grassroots football, from development officers to support staff, and their protection is crucial to ensuring football remains a sport for all.”
Last year, SIPTU’s Our Union, Our Team campaign successfully led to improved dialogue between staff and FAI leadership. Actions were suspended on the understanding that a more collaborative approach to change would be adopted. However, recent meetings with FAI representatives have failed to provide clarity on the current uncertainty.
SIPTU has stressed the importance of being involved in any consultations relating to potential changes. The Union is currently exploring all available avenues to support its members during this period of uncertainty and will continue to keep them informed throughout the process.
Kennedy added: “If a meaningful engagement process is not urgently reinstated, SIPTU may be left with no choice but to reactivate the Our Union, Our Team campaign. The union stands ready to mobilise once again in defence of its members and in support of safeguarding football as an inclusive and community-driven sport.”
