Members of the SIPTU Meath District Committee met with local Fine Gael politicians last week, to ask them to consider the Irish Congress of Trade Union (ICTU) budget proposals that are aimed at reaching Ireland’s agreed deficit targets, spurring job creation and boosting recovery prospects. A delegation from the SIPTU Meath District Committee met with Meath Fine Gael TDs Damien English and Ray Butler, on Thursday, 29th August. The SIPTU Meath District Committee delegation included Chairperson, Anton McCabe, Secretary, John Regan, Vice-Chairperson, Tina O'Brien and Tara Mines Shop Steward, Dick McGlew.John Regan said: “Both meetings were positive, with a good exchange of views. The TDs said they would consider the ICTU proposals in detail and all four Fine Gael TDs in Meath will meet with District Committee representatives to give a formal response to the document within the next ten days." The ICTU proposals include the Government making a fiscal consolidation of €2 billion, which is smaller than is currently proposed, an investment stimulus of €4.5 billion over the next two years – financed in a manner that limits the cost to the taxpayer – and targeted tax increases for the highest earners, including a greater contribution from the profitable corporate sector.ICTU is also calling for no further cuts to non-pay ‘primary’ public spending and greater efficiency in the delivery of public services.
