SIPTU members in Irish Rail will launch a campaign of industrial action and participate in a one day work stoppage if the transport company carries out a threat to cut workers wages on Sunday, 24th August. The industrial action is scheduled to begin on Sunday, 24th August, with workers implementing a ‘work to rule’ action. This will be followed by a 24 hour work stoppage beginning at 12.01 a.m. on Monday, 25th August.SIPTU Utilities and Construction Organiser, Owen Reidy, said: “Our members have on four occasions rejected proposals that have included further pay cuts. However, the management of Irish Rail has threatened to implement reductions in workers’ pay from 24th August.“Our members in Irish Rail voted in early June in favour of taking industrial action if management attempted to force through further cuts to their pay. This industrial action can include 24 hour and 48 hour work stoppages”.He added: “SIPTU does not have a mandate from its members to engage in any further negotiations with the management of Irish Rail which include any pay reductions. However, we are available at anytime to discuss with management other forms of cost saving proposals which could be implemented at the company”.SIPTU represents workers in all grades in Irish Rail.
