SIPTU members are taking strike action at St. Leo’s College in Carlow, county Carlow, today (Friday, 13th March) as part of a dispute relating to their employer’s failure to establish an appropriate workplace pension scheme. Pickets have been placed at all entrances to the college and will remain in place until 5.00 pm this evening.SIPTU Organiser, Bill Mulcahy, said: “Our members, who work as caretakers, catering staff and cleaners, have been left with no option but to take strike action. They have pursued their claim to have access to a properly funded pension scheme, with the appropriate employer contributions, in direct negotiations with management and at talks at the Labour Relation Commission.“However, management has refused to reach an agreement which respects the workers’ right to an adequate pension scheme and has also refused to attend a Labour Court hearing on the matter.”He added: “Our members wish to see a speedy resolution to this dispute. They greatly appreciate the support they have received from teaching staff at the college and the local community.”
