SIPTU representatives have met with union members and management at the Lonza plant, Swords, County Dublin, to discuss alternatives to the closure of the plant. SIPTU Organiser, Michelle Quinn, said: “Workers at the plant are still in a state of shock following the announcement by management that it intends to end production at the facility by mid-May.“The 30 day statutory redundancy consultation period formally began yesterday (Tuesday, 19th March) and SIPTU will be fully engaging with management during this period regarding all possible alternatives to job losses."She added: “If saving the jobs of our members proves impossible, the union will seek to negotiate redundancy terms which fully appreciate the long and valuable service these workers have provided to this company."The Lonza plant has been operational since 1966 and manufactures chemicals for the cosmetics and paint industry. Over 40 workers are currently employed at the plant of which 23 are SIPTU members.
