SIPTU has stated its support for the National Project for the Elders which will be launched in Cathal Brugha Barracks, Dublin 6, on Wednesday, 22nd February, between 10.00 a.m. and 11.00 a.m. The event, which is hosted by Senator Marie-Louise O'Donnell, will bring together older people from around the country and involve activities that are focused on increasing their understanding of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. SIPTU National Campaigns and Equality Organiser, Karan O Loughlin, said: “Older people, as with every other section of the population, have human rights. It is vital that there is a vibrant and inclusive discussion and articulation of the human rights of older people in Ireland and internationally. This project will go some way in highlighting the rights older people have and I would encourage SIPTU members to participate. “The SIPTU Retired Members Section works all year round to lobby, organise and advocate for the rights of older people. The section will continue its work to improve the protection of older people’s rights so that they can continue to participate and contribute to society.” She added: “SIPTU members can receive more information on getting involved in the initiative by emailing SIPTU Retired Members Section Secretary, Paddy Moran, at pmoran@siptu.ie.”
